Tooth Extraction in Melrose MA | Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Sometimes tooth extraction may be recommended for the benefit of your oral health. This can be a result of severe tooth damage from:
- Tooth decay
- Periodontal disease
- Severe physical damage
An examination is conducted to determine if the tooth can be saved or if extraction is most beneficial. Teeth are usually pulled out in one piece but some teeth may need to be removed in pieces. Wisdom teeth, for example, may need to be removed in pieces if the tooth has not completely emerged.
How can I prevent losing a tooth?
Proper dental care is your solution. The better you care for your teeth, the less likely tooth decay and gum disease develop. Our main objective is to save teeth but if it is not salvageble, teeth extraction is the option. Also, a tooth that is impacted needs removal because the overcrowding can shift the other teeth. Wisdom teeth are a great example. Although some patients are not bothered by them, wisdom teeth are likely to cause shifting, decay, and gum disease. Removing them prevents future dental work.
After a tooth extraction, wait 24 hours to brush your teeth. Brush gently and rinse with warm salt water to clean the affected area. Use cold packs and over-the-counter medication to reduce swelling and pain. Please note that prescribed medication may be assigned to you – use as directed. A liquid diet may be best during the first couple of days. If you decide to eat solid food, chew on the opposite side of the extraction site.
Avoid the following to improve healing and reduce bleeding:
- Harsh rinsing
- Hot drinks
- Drinking from straws
- Alcoholic drinks
- Alcohol containing mouthwash
- Strenuous activities
Tooth extraction is a common and safe procedure. However, if you notice any of the following, contact us or go to the nearest hospital:
