Dental Implant Dentist: What is a Dental Implant Dentist?

Dental Implant Dentist

Dental Implant Dentist | Dental implants are an amazing advancement in dental technology that has greatly improved the lives of millions of people needing replacements for one or more missing teeth. Their superior stability and durability make them the most popular tooth replacement choice for those who can afford them.

Your area dental implant dentist, or periodontist, certainly has their hands full these days.

What is a dental implant dentist?

A dental implant dentist, or periodontist, is a type of dentist who specializes in placing dental implants. Naturally, a professional who specializes in something tends to be better at it than those who perform a wide variety of treatments, although other types of dentist can still perform a satisfactory dental implant procedure.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a type of structure that is placed within the jawbone to provide the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. Although there is no perfect replacement for a natural tooth, implants are not far off.

Each dental implant is made up of three parts:

  • A metal post made of a titanium alloy
  • An abutment
  • A dental crown

What is it like getting a dental implant?

The process of receiving a dental implant requires a few appointments and some waiting time. In your first visit, your dental implant dentist will place a titanium metal post into your jawbone, which will provide a solid anchor for the entire structure.

After your jawbone has fused around this implanted post, which takes a few months, you will have an abutment placed on top of it at a follow-up appointment.

Finally, your dentist will place a dental crown on top of the entire structure. The crown will resemble the above-gum part of a natural tooth and serve as a chewing surface that allows you to firmly bite down without any slippage.

Advantages of Dental Implants:

  • Durability
  • Functionality
  • Prevents bone loss

Durability

Implants are a long-lasting solution to missing teeth. If you care for your implant properly by regularly brushing and flossing at home, just as you do with your natural teeth, your implant should last for the rest of your life.

Functionality

A dental implant functions just like a natural tooth. You will be able to chew your food and bite down with a solid foundation provided by your new implant.

Prevents Bone Loss

Having a missing tooth can lead to a problem that is not noticeable at first. A process called resorption begins to occur. Without the presence of a tooth root – natural or otherwise – the underlying bone begins to melt away. Implants prevent this from occurring.

Bone Graft Procedure

For patients who have experienced bone loss in the area where they are getting a dental implant, a bone graft procedure may be necessary to shore up the area for an implant. After the donated bone has been completely assimilated, the patient can then go ahead with a regular dental implant procedure.
